Socket Set Screws

In contrast to other types of fastener the Hexagon Socket Setscrew is Primarily used in compression as opposed to the more familiar tensile fastener.

The usual tensile strength grades, therefore, are not specified (e.g. 10.9, 12.9) but a material property class indicating material hardness, normally 45H.

They must resist three types of combined forces acting on the Setscrew, torsional (rotational) and axial (lateral) movement and vibration.

To be effective, socket screws should produce a strong clamping action. This resists movement between the assembled component parts through the compression developed in tightening the setscrews. Since holding power is proportional to seating torque, the tighter you can seat the screw, the higher the compression force will be.

Deep and accurate sockets will improve the engagement of the wrench key of driver-bit, which in turn assist in tightening.

The operative part of a Setscrew is its point. Various point forms are available, and each is designed to suit particular applications...
